The Giver

My initial instinct when I first pick up a novel, any novel, is to study the cover. When I first picked up The Giver by Lois Lowry it looked like a book that would not be of interest to me, so right in the beginning I already felt detached from it. I knew that it had to atleast be a well written book because of all the awards it received. I began reading it with very low expectations. Once I picked up this novel I could not put it down. I read so closely that I felt as if i was in the same setting as Jonas was experiencing; this world of sameness, being known as numbers, and getting assigned your “assignments” that would stay with you until your an elder. I couldn’t imagine living a life that was against having your own feelings. As soon as i finished with the first couple of chapters I knew that this was going to be a book that I enjoyed. I didn’t expect to feel as if I was living the life of Jonas, nor did I expect to feel the anxiousness of what was going to happen next, or what Jonas’ assignment was going to be. This just proves the saying, you can’t judge a book by its cover. It made me realize that the cover is the last thing that I should’ve looked at to predict what this book was going to be about. I am very impressed with this book so far that I can’t wait to read on and see what will happen next while Jonas is undergoing his training as a Reciever.

I have to disagree a little bit here. While, yes, as the old cliche goes, “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” I think looking at the cover is a *fine* pre-reading technique. Even though one of your pre-reading judgments was that you weren’t going to like the book, you also had a clue that the book was going to be different than what you’re accustomed to reading. And it was! It just turns out that you also kept and open enough mind to find out you liked it as well!
