The Giver

My initial instinct when I first pick up a novel, any novel, is to study the cover. When I first picked up The Giver by Lois Lowry it looked like a book that would not be of interest to me, so right in the beginning I already felt detached from it. I knew that it had to atleast be a well written book because of all the awards it received. I began reading it with very low expectations. Once I picked up this novel I could not put it down. I read so closely that I felt as if i was in the same setting as Jonas was experiencing; this world of sameness, being known as numbers, and getting assigned your “assignments” that would stay with you until your an elder. I couldn’t imagine living a life that was against having your own feelings. As soon as i finished with the first couple of chapters I knew that this was going to be a book that I enjoyed. I didn’t expect to feel as if I was living the life of Jonas, nor did I expect to feel the anxiousness of what was going to happen next, or what Jonas’ assignment was going to be. This just proves the saying, you can’t judge a book by its cover. It made me realize that the cover is the last thing that I should’ve looked at to predict what this book was going to be about. I am very impressed with this book so far that I can’t wait to read on and see what will happen next while Jonas is undergoing his training as a Reciever.
